A Slice of Life – Echoes of Our Time EP (self-released)

A Slice Of Life is not only a Belgian post-punk / dark wave band blending melancholic atmospheres with driving guitars and infectious melodies, but also one of the most underrated band within their genre. The band pairs strong songwriting with a powerful, expressive vocal style. Balancing energy and melancholy, A Slice Of Life creates a sound that is intense yet accessible. Known for compelling live performances, the band has built a strong reputation on stages across Belgium and Europe. We saw them on stage, interviewed them, reviewed their albums and loved it all so far. What do we think about the new EP? Read it all underneath:

Calling the new single before launching the EP: Back is like launching a clear and simple message: we are BACK! And indeed: they are back and sound by moments sharper, more energetic but also keep in touch with their roots and influences (hence Robert Smith and The Smiths). Yup: the single sounds like a very personal song, with vocals that will make you listen back to The Smiths. The new drummer sounds good, and yes it has also a touch of the 80’s with some shoegaze.

The next song explodes from the start with sharp guitars, but once the vocals jump in we get another flow: powerful vocals with a slice of Robert Smith and strong drum play next to the bass guitar player. “Echoes” of our past (is how I would have called the song) is a nice looking back in a The Cure-minded way. I’m pretty sure if Robert Smith hears this song he would say: dang I wished I would have written it and that is the best compliment you can give A Slice of Life!

Forever has a long intro, just like on the last The Cure album, sound wise it’s a mix of that one with a feel of Disintegration. I can hear a band and not just a singer with session musicians.

The sharpest and heaviest song comes in the end: Crawling. Listen to the guitar play, the drums, the vocals … It’s pure energy. Sound wise it has a bit of The Sisters of Mercy mixed with The Fields of the Nephilim. Going out with a big bang and leaving is hungry for more.

Yes it’s a great EP, yes it deserves positive press, bookings, spins by DJ’s and a decent record label. Wandering why a certain Belgian label never approached them and rather decided to sign another band. Sad as you have here a real band and great singer who gives it all on stage (with emotions, power, grinta and gives meaning to the lyrics). This one sits next to Siglo XX anno 2026 and thus is the ultimate dream of gothic rock lovers anno 2026.
