  Van Muylem    3 november 2021

In this time of problems, COVID-19, lock-ups ... We need a song about problems with a catchy tune and yes one artist did that work: Neal Francis! Enjoy and be ready to sing-a-long!

IDLES - CAR CRASH

Car Crash is the second single from IDLES' highly anticipated third album, Crawler, coming 12th November. Frontman Joe Talbot describes Car Crash as “the horrific, comedown hangover - waking up in the morning and realizing the smashes, like, what am I doing with my life?” Guitarist Mark Bowen adds, “We wanted it to be as violent as possible to reflect that. I really wanted it to be this sonic touchstone. It touches on things being transient and momentary - even a single drum hit. It’s like a memory, when the moment has passed and you deal with the repercussions over and over again, and they morph and change into something else. It’s one of the first times on an IDLES song where we used proper effects on the vocals - it was Joe going through my pedal board, so you get both clarity and degradation."

EELS - STEAM ENGINE

Steam Engine is the latest track from EELS’ upcoming fourteenth studio album Extreme Witchcraft, out January 28 via PIAS and the band’s own E Works Records.

EELS recently unveiled the album track Good Night On Earth, which continues to receive extensive critical acclaim; The New York Times raves, “a fuzz-toned guitar riff and a snappy beat carry Good Night on Earth, a quintessential Eels song: hoarse, succinct, dry-eyed and well aware of life’s ironies.” EELS leader Mark Oliver Everett, aka E, co-produced the record with PJ Harvey producer and guitarist John Parish, marking the first time the two have recorded together since 2001’s Souljacker album.

THE SLOW SHOW - BLINKING

The Slow Show will release their fourth studio album, their first for 3 years, entitled STILL LIFE, via [PIAS] (Europe) and Velveteen Records (ROW) - out on 4th February. The four piece who first formed in Manchester, UK will support the release with a European Tour in February and March 2022. Their show at De Roma on February 13th is already sold out. Lead track Blinking is a perfect taster to the new direction STILL LIFE offers. “It's an ode to love and loyalty. The song is a defiant pledge to never giving up on the people you love. Musically we wanted the song to have impact, a directness and powerful punch that we'd previously shied away from.” - Robert Goodwin.

BLACK COUNTRY, NEW ROAD - BREAD SONG

Black Country, New Road release Bread Song, the second single to be taken from their highly anticipated second album, Ants From Up There, which will be released on 4th February on Ninja Tune.

Already a firm live favourite since it’s reveal earlier this year, the new single’s highly emotive lyrics and tender, stripped back instrumentation have seen it instantly gel with fans. Lyrically, Bread Song might be rooted in something hugely relatable and every day - bread crumbs in bed - but the lyrics were tweaked and thought about in various stages over a four year period. The track also continues to signal the musical evolution of the band’s new material further delving into more melodic territory with subtly intricate dynamics, which swell up into beautiful moments that engulf the listener like crashing waves.

NEAL FRANCIS - PROBLEMS

Neal Francis releases his new  album In Plain Sight, on the 5th November. On Problems, the focus track for album release he eases into a brighter and breezier mood, mining inspiration from early-’70s Sly & the Family Stone and the glistening soft rock of Mirage-era Fleetwood Mac. But in a stark contrast to the track’s radiant synth and rapturous harmonies, Problems centers on Francis’s exacting introspection. “It’s about being half-in and half-out of a relationship, and how untenable that is,” he says. “I wrote it at a time when I really couldn’t maintain a relationship, because I had too many issues with myself that needed to be addressed.”

SPIRITUALIZED - ALWAYS TOGETHER WITH YOU

This is the opening track from the long-awaited new Spiritualized album Everything Was Beautiful. A reworking / supercharging of a track originally recorded in demo quality in 2014, this new version is a perfect Spiritualized song; a breathtaking, hard edged, psychedelic pop tune where themes of high romance and space travel collide. In one of the most sublime refrains of the band’s career, the backing singers call out “if you gotta lonely heart too”. And don’t we all? Sometimes?
