[PIAS] - Singles of the week #16: Sons (BE) has the single of the week!

English:CD-preview
  Van Muylem    20 april 2022

First of all: Editors launches a new single, but it's a slow grower and I'm not yet into it. Idles remixes Heat from Whispering Sons, but I'm not yet completly into it. The honor of the best single of the week goes to Sons (BE) with Sweet Boy. The song sounds sharp and has heavy passage’s. The effects on the vocals are cool. I'm pretty sure it will be a hit on stage!

EDITORS - HEART ATTACK

Editors return today with new single Heart Attack. The track marks their first new music since 2019, and the debut release in their latest incarnation with Ivor Novello winning composer and producer Benjamin John Power, aka Blanck Mass, who joins the band as a full time member. With its pulsating electronic intensity, sweeping 80’s inspired synths and epic, driving drum pads, Heart Attack is the perfect introduction to Editors’ new era, whilst also fitting seamlessly into the band’s songbook; its gothic sonics and Tom Smith’s brooding vocals making it instantly recognisable. “Heart Attack is a song of obsession, about losing yourself in someone, a love song, a morbid love song,” says Smith.

A band that has refused to stay still over the course of their 17 year career, Heart Attack kicks off the next era of one of the UK’s most intriguing and enduring musical success stories.

SONS - SWEET BOY

Sweet Boy is the 3rd track to be released taken from SONS sophomore album due for release on April 22nd on [PIAS] Recordings. Machine gun guitars, tight and mean drums, singer Robin Borghgraef going overdrive in the chorus, Sweet Boy has SONS foaming at the bit. A track destined to cause mayhem in clubs, arena’s and festivals everywhere!

WHISPERING SONS - HEAT (IDLES REMIX)

Belgian five-piece Whispering Sons share a brand-new remix of their single Heat by none other than British-Irish rogue-rockers IDLES. Stripping the song to its bare bones, ‘Heat’ gets turned upside down in a hypnotizing industrial disco noisefest.

We’ve been long time IDLES fans!”, singer Fenne Kuppens explaims, “Whether we were blasting ‘Mother’ through the backstage to get us warmed up pre-show, or chanting “concrete to leather” when the adrenaline was still pouring as we were driving back to the hotel, their music always put us in the right mindset. Getting one of our tracks remixed by them is pretty unbelievable.”

Not only did IDLES put their gnashing teeth in one of Whispering Son’s songs, they also invited the band as a special guest on their German dates in support of their new album Crawler.

ADÉ - TOUT SAVOIR

Adé (Adélaïde Chabannes) has already a history and has been part of this scene for years and years. She is one of the heads and singing faces of Thérapie Taxi, with whom she reached a cult status, discovered many genre's and poses for a post-adolescence feel. They launched 3 albums, toured for 7 years and nailed it with an amazing finale at the Zénith (Paris). When she turns 26 years, Adé goes solo and presents us her first single: Tout Savoir. Her first album will be out in september. It's clear she has been influenced by the americana genre mixed with néo-rétro and pop. This artist feels liberated, electrified and ready to shine on the top of her powers!

VINCENT DELERM - AVEC JEANNE

His first album has been launched 20 years ago and he wanted to have a party! He could have just launched a best of or going on the road with the live versions of his best songs ... But he choose to simply go back to his roots, where it all started! 20 after his tour with Jeanne Cherhal in april and may 2002: it all gets rebooted and will perform 12 times at the Théâtre de l’Européen from 28 april to 21 mai 2022. For this occasion he launches Avec Jeanne a referral to his partner in crime.

DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS - WELCOME TO CLUB XIII

Drive-By Truckers have announced the release of their 14th studio album, Welcome 2 Club XIII, due via ATO Records on Friday, June 3. The swinging title track, Welcome 2 Club XIII, pays homage to the Muscle Shoals honky-tonk where founding members Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley got their start. “There were no cool bars in town and Club XIII was the best we had,” says Hood, referring to the two vocalist/guitarists’ former band, Adam’s House Cat, “but it wasn’t all that good, and our band wasn’t particularly liked there. From time to time the owner would throw us a Wednesday night or let us open for a hair-metal band we were a terrible fit for, and everyone would hang out outside until we were done playing. It wasn’t very funny at the time, but it’s funny to us now.

TIM BURGESS - HERE COMES THE WEEKEND

While in The Charlatans, Tim’s indefatigable energy has been a consistent fuel for the band across thirteen high-charting albums. His solo adventure has been no less extraordinary, scaling new heights in 2020 with his fifth solo album, I Love The New Sky, followed by the Ascent of the Ascended EP in 2021. Here Comes The Weekend is his first single since, with a video from Kevin Godley on the way. It’s the first taste of music from a new album due for release later this year via Bella Union. Here Comes The Weekend is a buoyant, bouncy, beaty beauty about a modern day romance both helped and hindered by technology.

HELEN GANYA - BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY

Helen Ganya, who previously recorded under the name Dog In The Snow and was part of the Lost Horizons project, has a new 4-track EP, Heart to Heart Mirage, out 13th May via Bella Union. Of the EP Helen says: “'Heart to Heart Mirage' is a collection of four songs written to accompany and precede the next album, crafted around similar imagery and themes but standing alone as an independent collection. The title comes from a lyric in the song ‘Haze/revolution’ which lent itself well thematically.” The single is the EP’s opening track, “Beautiful Country” of which she says: “'Beautiful Country' is a little tongue-in-cheek heartbreak on the illusion of meritocracy.”

MILDLIFE - VAPOUR (LIVE FROM SOUTH CHANNEL ISLAND)

Since oozing onto the scene, Mildlife’s mellifluous mix of jazz, krautrock and demon grooves has fast become a word of mouth sensation among open-minded DJs and diggers searching for the perfect beat. 2020’s album Automatic saw the band elevate with more disciplined, directional and arguably more danceable synergy. Unable to play shows due to the pandemic, Mildlife travelled by boat to a long abandoned 19th century island fort to perform for fairy penguins and abalone poachers. The result is Live from South Channel Island, a 70 minute motion picture and live album where the band masterfully recreate the magic of their live shows, framed by the gorgeous Port Phillip Bay. It’s on youtube!
