Donna Cannone - Donna Cannone (Despotz Records)

English:CD-review

Former Thundermother member Giorgia Carteri (guitar) and her fellow Italian ex-pat found themselves heading to a rehearsal room to play some music and, in their own words, ‘have some fun.’ Giorgia’s former Thundermother bandmate Tilda Nilke Nordlund was brought in on drums as the trio began putting together a number of new songs. A knock at the door brought a surprise as, guitar in hand, Björn ‘Speed’ Strid (Soilwork, The Nightflight Orchestra) had heard what the band were up to and wanted in. Keen to express himself as a lead guitarist, the world-renowned singer was impressed with what he’d heard the fledgling trio coming up and with and soon the quartet were recording demos. One of these demos fell into the hands of Swedish label Despotz Records and a deal was soon done.

The first fruits of this deal were a brace of well-received singles – Cross the Line’, ‘Nothing to Do’ and 'Is It True' feat. Mia Karlsson from Crucified Barbara, the band picking up support across the world and alerting everyone to the presence of Donna Cannone. As I absolutely adored Thundermother & Crucified Barbara (Sweden’s best female fronted metal bands) I came across this one! Another great band from Sweden is born, yay!

Cross The Line: straight forward retro rock with good vocals and the perfect drive! The backings remind me a bit of a Soulwax track (NY Excuse), but no worries: all good! Catchy as hell! Be ready to sing-a-long!

Look Around goes fast and hard. It’s a smoking hot track with a great live feel! The song is over before you’ll notice it as it goes so hard and so fast (and is really short).

Nothing To Do has a cool and catchy chorus, the tempo is not too high and we get great vocals. The music has a nice retro 70’s touch. Once again The Soulwax kind of backings are also back in town (NY Excuse).

Whatever Comes Your Way swings and rocks from the start! It must be an excellent live track too! The male vocals here remind me a bit of the band from Belgium: Admiral Freebee (listen to Oh Darkness).

Is It True has a more acoustic guitar sound with a catchy chorus and smoked out vocals. For the first time I also hear the vocals of the ex-leading lady from Crucified Barbara (Mia Karlsson), making it a great duet! I love it!

Pushed goes fast, is catchy and really has a good and very melodic sound! I like the vocals too! Luca really does a great job (just as the backings).

Lost CityLong Lost Friend is another catchy rocker. I adore the chorus and the backings! This one might haunt me for a long long time!

Message to Tomorrow is another catchy rocker with cool vocals and nice backings. The sound is sweet and perfect to perform on stage! I adore the roaring guitar sound!

The North has a touch of Bon Jovi and a slice of melancholia. I like this “newer” sound.

Why Am I Here has a very catchy chorus, great backings and a sweet rocking sound! The guitar sound is succulent! It’s a great track to end this very first album with!

Well: I loved it and will for sure keep this album spinning! And to be honest: I almost missed it and regret it! But thanks to the link with Tundermother/Crucified Barbara this one got a second chance! Keep on rocking Folks! Hope to see you one day on stage!
