Bat Eyes (BE) – Bat Eyes (PIAS)

English:CD-review
  Van Muylem    9 oktober 2022

Glimmering guitar-pop songs spiked with a healthy dose of melancholy, the Belgian 4-piece deliver indie power pop just as we like it! Crunchy but melodic guitars full of reverb, bass and drums tight but loose and serving the songs and big sing-a-long choruses.

Formed as a 3-piece in 2019 when frontman Koen Wijnant decided to record a full album out of the home demos he had been piling up, they upgraded to a 4-piece by early 2020. With Luna De Bruyne on bass/vocals duties, Tomas Serrien on drums and Birger Ameys on guitar the band self-released 3 singles. "Loria", "You're the Breeze" and "Saving Up" showed a band with lots of love for 90ies melodic alternative pop and with the knack to write a damn catchy tune.

Bat Eyes’s debut album delivers 10 songs fit for the perfect summer roadtrip and a must have for fans of The Posies, Nada Surf, Big Star, Teenage Fanclub, Stone Roses

As I was young enough to get the Britpop vibe and ran into The Stone Roses I dig the music of Bat Eyes! You’re The Breeze is a good example of what I just said and that’s only the opening track! The song starts with that typical 80’s hoovering sound and o so sweet vocals with a slice of psychedelica. Saving Up has a great guitar sound (even a bit rambling). The sweet vocals give it a catchy touch. Stop Thinking is even sweeter and I would call it the sweetest song so far. The drums do their work, whilst the guitars keep it rocking. Emily is so sweet I would call it a love song without even reading the lyrics. I Don’t Mind starts slowly and becomes the kind of song that makes you dream away and stop thinking about stress, troubles etc. The song sounds a bit harder and goes also a bit faster towards the end. Forever Wasted doesn’t sound as waisted as the title and still gets enrolled in sweetness. The song rather sounds like eating too much sweets and get wasted teeth. Cracking Up balances between a sweet dreamer and a rocking sound. Nothing Here is a soft rocker with their typical sweet sound. I Could Be Dreaming starts like dreampop and is ready to make you dream away or can also be used as a lullaby! I’m On It is a good closing track and keeps the tempo high, almost giving it a big bang!

Reviewing this album track by track is almost impossible as I feel like saying 10 times the same thing with only here and there other twists. But globally seen it’s a real great album with a really good sound! I loved their single’s and so do I with this album! Next thing is seeing them on stage when COVID-19 is completely history!
