Corlyx continue their run of guitar-led singles pulling from 80s and 90s goth subculture with "Your Heart In The Serpent's Mouth," a dream-pop-meets-doom-y-gothic-rock departure that slows the band's tempo down without losing their bite.
Where recent single "More Anarchy" leaned into raw, politically charged rock, "Your Heart In The Serpent's Mouth" pulls the band toward something hazier and more atmospheric. "We are exploring all the beautiful colours of this time period," says Caitlin Stokes. "Gothic Rock is at the core but so much was going around the subculture at this time, and currently there isn't a lot of representation for rock genres in the scene - one of the many advantages of having a full band line up now is to explore these sounds." Stokes points to a long-standing love of Cocteau Twins as a reference point for the track, calling it "quite experimental even for us," and admits the band initially hesitated to release the slower-tempo song as a single at all - "but really anything goes at this point and I love it so much."
Guitarist/producer Brandon Ashley built the track's guitar tones around that dream-pop brief. "Lets make the guitars super dreamy for this track, was a request by Caitlin and I obliged," he says. "I have my own unique tones that I spent a very long time creating, so we don't necessarily sound like Cocteau Twins, but they were certainly an inspiration for this track."
Lyrically, the song carries what Stokes calls a dual meaning - the certainty of pain in a cruel world, and the risk of putting your heart on the line for someone else. "Your heart in the serpents mouth, fragile and delicate, always in danger of being eaten alive, or worse," she explains. "It's a tale of trust and vulnerability, accepting the fates of love and the fears that come with this."
"Your Heart In The Serpent's Mouth" is the third single from Corlyx's upcoming album, to be released early 2027.
About Corlyx
Formed in Los Angeles in 2015 by singer-songwriter Caitlin Stokes and producer/guitarist Brandon Ashley, Corlyx relocated first to Berlin and then the UK, building a catalogue that has moved fluidly between industrial dark electro, 80s goth and post-punk, and darkwave. Now a full band with bassist Davide Rocco and drummer Flow Toulman, Corlyx are signed to Out Of Line Music alongside labelmates including Till Lindemann and Aesthetic Perfection.
With "Your Heart In The Serpent's Mouth," Corlyx prove their genre palette keeps widening - trading the dancefloor urgency of recent singles for something slower, stranger, and just as haunting.
