  Van Muylem    13 april 2022

Disorientations has with Waiting For a cool old school post punk hit! Fans of this genre will love it! When I reviewed the new Sons album I dreamt this one got a cool clip and look: it's indeed a single! Somehow I had a feeling this excellent track would have been picked out! Succeed is a hell of a track and thus single of the week! Belgium has 2 toptracks this week!

SONS - SUCCEED

Succeed is the second track to be released taken from SONS sophomore album Sweet Boy, due for release on April 22nd on [PIAS] Recordings. Kicking off the album in style Succeed ups the ante with circular guitar outburst over galloping drums. Less of a punch in the face, more a hypnotizing psychedelic trip, proving these 4 hellraisers shave more up their sleeve then straight up rock & roll. Succeed grinds & grooves, it’s loud & loose and freakin’ awesome!

DISORIENTATIONS - WAITING FOR

New single taken from Disorientations debut album Memory Lanes. Another 3min slice of hard hitting post-punk!

“Disorientations gooit de beuk erin met een drummer wiens zweet je haast hoort wegspatten en een gitaar die snerpt als een aandrijfriem. De wall of soudn die eruit voortvloeit is bijna een Chinese Muur” — De Standaard ****

“Imagine the schizophrenic buzz of Hüsker Dü, the pitch-black turbulence of Joy Division, and the epicness of White Lies.” — Turn Up The Volume

“Disorientations, debut will long remain in the memory for all the right reasons, it’s a dark edgy journey around the human psyche that somehow manages to find the perfect balance of haunting melancholia and post-punk thrills to leaving the listening gasping for breath.” — Rhythm&Booze

“The trio’s raw and compelling post-punk translates their emotions in a direct musical manner, they muse in a loud and introspective way about life.” — The Punk Site

BILLY NOMATES - BLUE BONES

First brand new music since 2021’s well-received Emergency Telephone EP, and first salvo from the as-yet unfinished second album. Immediately after the UK’s third lockdown period, Tor Maries aka Billy Nomates bounced back into the Invada Studio with the resultant Blue Bones, a typically rousing and uplifting two-fingers to the anxieties caused by the enforced isolation.

KATY J PEARSON – TALK OVER TOWN

Katy J Pearson shared details of her stunning new album, Sound of the Morning, released on Heavenly Recordings on Friday 8th July 2022. The lead single Talk Over Town is comfortable revelling in more laid-back, Real Estate-esque melodies - a track that attempts to make sense of her recent experiences, of “being Katy from Gloucester, but then being Katy J Pearson who’s this buzzy new artist.”

EZRA FURMAN – BOOK OF OUR NAMES

"This song is about what it feels like to live together under an empire that doesn’t value your lives. I sing it as a Jew and as a trans woman, knowing well the stakes and consequences of being part of a hated population." Produced by John Congleton, with backing vocals from Shannon Lay, it's a testament to her range as a songwriter, the track is a vibey, self-possessed, mantra-laden protest song against tyranny of all sorts, showcasing everything fans love about Ezra.

AUTOMATIC - VENUS HOUR

Venus Hour is the second single from Automatic’s forthcoming album Excess. Automatic’s Izzy Glaudini originally wrote Venus Hour as an ode to “psycho-feminine energy”. The song is “about whatever it is inside you that makes you want to do that thing that isn’t logical, or safe.” Venus Hour imagines desire as a double-edged sword, an impulse that can result in addiction. Automatic will open for IDLES, Parquet Courts and Tame Impala this Spring.

49th & MAIN – STREET LIGHTS (RADIO EDIT)

Irish born indie pop duo 49th & Main (consisting of Ben O’Sullivan and Paddy King) announce their signing to Counter Records (a Ninja Tune imprint) by sharing new single Streetlights. Although the 23-year-olds only started releasing music in 2020, their self-released projects – Neon Palm Trees and breakout single Catching Eyes – have seen the duo gain 20 million streams across streaming platforms in less than two years. Their first ever headline shows at Whelan’s, Dublin and Set Theatre, Kilkenny on St Patrick's Day both sold out in less than 24 hours. Their first single with Counter Records, Streetlights, is an uptempo account of ‘wasted’ youth for our times. Mixed by Nate Burgess (Denzel Curry, A$AP Rocky, Brandy), twinkly guitars and a catchy beat, paired with King’s dulcet vocals, evoke both solace and joy in carefree measures.

MYLAR - TRAILBLAZER

Trailblazer is the third track to be taken from the beautiful Elsewhere EP. “The bass line of this song came first. It has a sinister, sultry, walking feel to it, and bass is a really instinctive sound. It made us think how easy and seductive it can be to follow people blindly. The production has a kind of warped 2000s disco-pop vibe which felt apt as that was a period that seems innocent by today’s standards” - Mylar. The band are a new signing for 2022 from Blue Flowers (Nilufer Yanya, Westerman, Puma Blue).
