Killthelogo – Reset (pias)

English:CD-review
  Van Muylem    3 februari 2022

killthelogo’s full length album is a fact. 12 tracks of uncompromising sound and content. This album respectfully revisits the ‘90s metal sound with a fresh and strong message. Co-produced with former .calibre producer Jo Francken and mixed by the great David Bottrill (Tool, Muse, dEUS, Dreamtheater, Placebo, Peter Gabriel, …)

Let’s first drop some info before we try to listen to these bombtracks:

It’s been almost 20 years... This is not a reunion, it is a powerful sequel. This new outfit has taken all that motivation and vision they had with .calibre, back in 2001, and applied it to today’s world. And what an angry and polarised world it has become. The band aims to unite and inspire new and older generations with a new sense of community. It’s a growing and gentle force against the pressures of the power-whores. With two original .calibre members and a few impressive additions to the line-up, killthelogo brings you new songs and ideas, but also some nostalgic flash-backs to the late 90ies and early 2000 vibes. Both on and off stage

***About the music*** killthelogo dabbles in the frequencies of vital anger and decisive revolt. That is why this music needs to be loud and aggressive. But it also has to be precise, effective, compelling and accessible. Catchy grooves are as important as high-gain volume. With this band, people will understand from the first note, that they are hearing something inescapable and necessary.

***Influences*** Growing up in the 90’s, all members in killthelogo were exposed to bands that showed clear examples of music with extreme dynamics and infectious energy: Rage Against The Machine, Tool, Rammstein, Nine Inch Nails, System of a Down, Nirvana, … These were all defining bands that addressed important personal, social and political issues, with a sound that greatly amplified what they were saying in the lyrics. killthelogo went to school on all of that and made their own rendition. There is a deliberate outspoken and physical energy to the band’s sound, visual language and live performances. You may turn up just to hear the music, but you could leave with a few bruises and a wake-up call. The band is all about intensifying and galvanising life.

***Mission = continuity*** killthelogo is a long term project on consumer disobedience & social activism. In the full spirit of its predecessor .calibre, they seek to help translate the drivers of social and political change to the larger public. As a branch in the wide scope of artistic expression, the project wants to be an extra and loud voice in the social debate and the 'separation of powers' that safeguard the balance in society. “The people in killthelogo are just like you, greatly flawed and imperfect. And we are not asking for perfection from anyone. We just hope to rekindle your sense of participation and community. Because that is what the people on those top floors fear most: us, talking to and actually understanding each other. We are you, as much as you are this loud and urgent voice! And we are not ashamed to say that we need you.”

Well it’s like the PR sheet tells us: ‘Reset’ is an audio-bomb waiting to detonate. From the unapologetic opener ‘Riot As One’ to the +9 min epic closer ‘Translucent’killthelogo is firing on all cylinders. Riot As One sums it all up before they let the bomb explode, just the way I love it! Feel the rage and the energy! You would almost say the album is recorded by experienced youngsters! Listen good to the lyrics too and enjoy! Buy More Sh!t is yet another bomb and reminds me strong about Rage Against The Machine or the Belgium pre-version: Mouse Analyse! The Deep State sounds a bit different from the previous songs and has even clean and melancholic vocals until the raging and screaming takes over and get mixed. It’s a pearl with a bluesy undertone in the slow parts. Taxes must be by now a well known song due to getting out as a single! It’s a typical song for a punk band and tells us what we all hate: Taxes! Let yourself go and scream along it will help you getting the anger out and become more zen afterwards! Bomb it all with your feelings and enjoy the music! Boutique Pharma starts slowly with a bluesy feel and goes against the pharma industry. The tempo of this song goes up and down like waves driven by anger. The Warehouse Moguls rocks well and has a good sound and the lyrics speak for themselves! In The Factory has a bluesy feel mixed with some anger, but there are not much lyrics except: “Whatever happens in the factory stays in the factory”. Iconoclast brings in more rock’n roll but also has some moments with a slow tempo and clean vocals that tells us more about the story within this song. Conspiracy has strong backings and a good bassline. The song reminds me strong of Rage Against The Machine but with a punk punchline. It’s a good song! Fuck Your Data: be ready to jump up and down and throw your arms in the air, headbang and do all kind of crazy shit you do whilst enjoying an excellent metal gig as this one really has it! It will be a bomb on stage! Clear As A Day has the same vibe as Boutique Pharma and has on top that “Fuck me” phrase and guitars on fire. The kind of Red Hot Chili Peppers passage is also pretty cool. The last song is called Translucent and sounds a bit like a song from The Doors until it explodes and becomes a heavy metal track, calms down again .... Take your time to listen to it as it’s 9:08 minutes long.

Well I’m happy I reviewed them and enjoyed this trip. I’m sure they will rock you on stage! I hope other magazine’s also review them, just as the fact that I hope some radio’s will give them some airplay! Support this band!

A message for those who don’t like it from the start: give it some time, listen to it a few spins and let it grow stronger and stronger like a slow grower! You’ll see!
