[PIAS] Singles of the week #8

English:CD-preview
  Van Muylem    24 februari 2022

Once again the selection of single of the week was pretty hard. Fontaines D.C., Nations Of Language, Molly Burman ... They all have a good and strong single. But this time it goes to an artist from Belgium/Bresil: STEF KAMIL CARLENS & DOLLY BING BING with READINESS IS ALL. The story and the power of the song got me hooked! I hope it inspires and gives stregnth to all people who know this situation!

STEF KAMIL CARLENS & DOLLY BING BING - READINESS IS ALL

Belgian-Brazilian pop & performance artist Dolly Bing Bing teams up with Stef Kamil Carlens to rework her single Readiness. Inspired by a citation from Shakespeare’s Hamlet – “the readiness is all” – the song deals with the pain & grief of loosing her busband and father of her daughter after a long battle against a lingering disease. The song is also about letting go and finding new strength. Together with Stef, Dolly breaths new life into her song and comes close to a perfect, bittersweet, beautiful and hypnotizing pop song.

Stef Kamil Carlens solo tour now ‘till end of April all over Belgium and the Netherlands.

FONTAINES D.C. - I LOVE YOU (RADIO EDIT)
"I Love You is about Ireland. It's about the loss of Irish culture, the damnation of it. It's my guilt, my personal guilt at abandoning Ireland in my mind. It's about loss and desperation. I think with  I have finally said what I need to say about where Ireland is going in the form of a lament." Brilliant second single of the Skinty Fia album campaign.

NATION OF LANGUAGE - ACROSS THAT FINE LINE
Nation of Language hail from Brooklyn, New York and consist of Ian Richard Devaney, Aidan Noell and Michael Sue Poi. The band self-released their debut album Introduction, Presence in May 2020, before getting picked up by [PIAS] for a worldwide release. Across That Fine Line is the perfect slice of synth-driven, melancholic indie pop!
Shades of OMD and Depeche Mode in the Brooklynites’ wonderfully solemn piece of retro electro pop.” – The Times
"They’ve delivered a true modern day classic of the synth pop genre.” – NME

MOLLY BURMANPRETTY GIRL (EMBARGO 24/02)

Following her debut EP, 20-year-old indie songstress Molly Burman returns with the reflective and stripped-back single, Pretty Girl. The track is a conversation with herself about living up to expectations and fitting into a mould of what society deems 'pretty'. Molly's featherweight vocals emerge as a key focal point within the piano backdrop, decorated with a cool acoustic guitar. Pretty Girl is a sugary alt-pop number sprinkled with anecdotal insights, not to be missed!

ODESZALAST GOODBYE (ft. BETTYE LAVETTE)

Grammy-nominated duo ODESZA return with their first new music in nearly four years with brand new single, The Last Goodbye, featuring acclaimed blues and soul singer Bettye LaVetteThe Last Goodbye was initially conceived when the duo discovered the original vocal in Bettye LaVette’s 1965 song Let Me Down Easy. Impressed by the power of the Blues Hall of Famer’s voice, the duo then deconstructed and rebuilt the track fusing cinematic sweeping synths and a modern electronic sound to complement Betty’s rich vocals. The single  premiered on The Zane Lowe Show on Apple Music 1, confirming what many fans had been hoping for after spotting cryptic clues on the duo’s website which teased their return to music.

MATTIELBLOOD IN THE YOLK
The opening twangs of Blood in The Yolk - an eerie, stream-of-consciousness tale of doomed love and eggs - hold up a fleeting, minor-key mirror to 2017’s Count Your BlessingsBlood in The Yolk is one last plea to reassemble a broken relationship.Mattiel’s new album is released on Friday 18th March.

DESTROYEREAT THE WINE, DRINK THE BREAD
Destroyer continue the lead-up to their new album, LABYRINTHITIS, out 25th March via Bella Union, with a new single, Eat the Wine, Drink the Bread. The new track follows lead single Tintoretto, It's For You.  Restless and slightly irreverent, Eat the Wine, Drink the Bread gallops along, fuelled by Joshua Wells’ percussion and John Collins’ drum programming. “Been meaning to wear my hair like this for ages … I mean down, down, all the way down,” Bejar coos, his anticipation bolstered by the driving bass and guitar beneath him. Yet even with this newfound release, he remains disillusioned with where he heads, his melancholy matched by a sombre piano.
