Outshine - The Awakening (Rockshots Records)

English:CD-review
  Van Muylem    15 april 2022

The band has a hard and dark background that has formed the band, the music, the lyrics and overall appearance. Fighting social injustice including lawsuits against Swedish tax authorities for musician rights (won in court spring 2017). The band has gone through deceptions, robberies, murder threats and trials concerning lost property.

With this darker and gloomy approach to it, much more in line with their history, the band has released the new single and video for "Nightcall". The sound is darker, melancholy and with more of a Sisters Of Mercy, Paradise Lost & Type O Negative feel to it with influences form 1980ties horror movie soundscapes.

The lyric on the new album is a reflection upon the dark times we are living in.

The lies, corruption, hidden agendas, and the rise of a fascist behaviour from both unknown and known "leaders" that expands anything we´ve seen in decades are influencing and misleading people around the world making them turn on each other.

A depraved glorification of the elite that hasn´t the common human being in mind has risen. Identity politics that put people in boxes to divide us, a modern segregation in the making. Our "heroes" is lecturing us on how to think and behave despite that they are totally disconnected from the reality common people live in. This in company with parts of the mainstream media, pushing society to silence, submission and, during the pandemic, financial disaster.

The pandemic has clearly showed who gains and who is not. The poor and middle-class are getting poorer, the rich insanely rich and the politicians folding to comply to not be targeted.

Virtue signalling is more important then actually helping or standing up for freedom of speech, common sense and every human beings’ equality. The ordinary people is getting hurt and the elite, hidden in plain sight, turns people against each other making bullying, cancelling and censoring people that is against their agenda common practice and the "good thing" to do.

But there is also light in this dark times. People are awakening, awareness is spreading. The common man and woman will fight back, and common sense needs to prevail. The world needs unity, we are all the same despite what the elite tell us.

Up to the actual album review now:

It´s All Lies starts with a real gothic doom sound: synth’s, a dramatic feel and epic guitars. The vocals have a typical gothic doom metal sound and are really good! I also adore the melodic and melancholic sound! Our Misery is a slow gothic metal track with a lot of pathos in it. I also hear some influences from Type O Negative.

Love Is Dead starts like a dark gothic track, filled with pathos and negative feelings. After one minute the tempo goes a bit up, helped by the guitars and some screaming. It’s for sure not the happiest song on this album! Swe Hates Me: not sure why it’s written like this, so this is not a typo from my hand. Fact is that this is a typical gothic doom metal song with a slow tempo, led by a synth and a bass guitar. No More Reasons starts with a piano, but pretty fast the guitars shred it away and take over. It a song that comes in waves: a piano and a guitar wave. Darkness Within (Agony) also starts with a piano, gets backed up by guitars and goes more and more into a melodic gothic rock feel. I Was The One goes more into a melancholic gothic rock direction with a catchy chorus and a good live feel! Last one is called: We Know Who You Are. It’s the last blow, the last outburst of energy! The lyrics are dark and feel like things are not getting better after this!

Well: it’s a short album. Overall great! I just miss one or 2 big hits or potential hits. I have a feeling things will get better for this band, we just have to wait a bit longer and let them grow!
