killthelogo – Brainmaker EP ([PIAS] RECORDINGS BELGIUM)

English:CD-review
  Van Muylem    17 december 2023

Entering its third year with relentless momentum, killthelogo is pushing boundaries and extending its musical legacy. Formed from the remnants of .calibre, an influential act of the early 2000s, killthelogo presents a formidable and rejuvenated force in the current landscape of alternative music. The band, rising like a phoenix from the ashes of its predecessor, continues to challenge the norms, echoing the sentiments of an increasingly divided world, and aiming to unify through a unique sense of community.

Following the release of their Reset album in November 2021 and the Deconsume EP in January 2022, Brainmaker is killthelogo’s natural next step in producing their own sound. It is a definite shift in a more alternative direction. Cutting riffs, eerie melodies, with clean, commanding vocals and weird experiments on all ends of the spectrum. Just like the name killthelogo implies, the band is evolving away from the shiny veneer and is aiming straight for the bleeding heart of what music is, from their perspective.

Brainmaker starts with a sticky and sweet sound, very warm and fuelled! I like the guitars, just as the vocals! Great piece of art!

Utopia is another track with a sweet sound, but the tempo is a bit slower this time (at least in the beginning as the song gets some teeth’s after a while).

The Wonder Ordinary is a more straight forward rocker: hot and steamy! The lyrics are a nice piece of criticism.

Synaesthesia mixes different genre’s: rock, metal, doom … The song goes from soft to heavy, back and forth. It’s the most interesting song on this EP!

Midlife Crisis (Cover Faith No More) comes pretty close to the original and they do it in a really good way! It’s an excellent way to close this EP!

I’m sure it will be a pleasure to play and hear these songs on stage as they set another step forward and work had on a bigger and better future!
