The best way to know an artist like Mariangela Demurtasis to sit down and listen to her songs unfold around you. That’s the kind of calling Dark Ability, her brand-new EP offers to the listener. The trade couldn’t be more favourable to the ones willing to spend their time in the company of the delicate, up-close and excruciatingly beautiful four songs that this EP has to offer.

Mariangela discovered her vocal vocation as a child, in the proud island of Sardinia, where she’s originally from. She lent her talent to many bands already, but you must best know her as the lead female singer of TRISTANIA, the Norwegian Gothic Metal pioneers with whom she made two highly successful albums and toured the world. As a guest singer she brought her beauty and attitude to such greats as Moonspell, Dark Tranquility or Orphaned Land and later she formed, together with Italian guitarist Kris Laurent, the band Ardours, releasing an album and one EP. On top of her impressive curriculum, she is now undertaking her best and most courageous adventure yet: writing, arranging, and signing all the songs that embellish the Dark Ability EP. This is the first stone in the launch of a solo career where Mariangela can totally be herself, taking her amazing vocal gifts into places she has never been before, ready to expose her old and anew fans to one of the most authentic talents in today’s atmospheric music scene.

City has already been released as a single and a clip. The warm piano mixed with her angelic voice, a bluesy guitar and some special effects on the backing vocals gives it a good start. Slowly the song awakens, a bit like the city in the mourning. It’s not a metal song but rather a kind of a pop/rock song and comes close to a ballad. Classic mixes strings, electronica and a bluesy guitar with her beautiful voice. Toward the end her voice goes more up and down and shows her vocal capacities. The more you listen to this song, the more it will crawl into your head and become sticky. Crosstime sounds very poppy and commercial. You would almost think this is how she sounds for years, whilst it’s as far as I know the first time I hear her singing like this for the first time. The last song is called Forgiverance and starts in a very fragile way carried on by her voice. Once we get some beats, she starts to sound a bit more like Adele. Towards the end the song becomes stronger, lead by her powerful vocals.

Well one conclusion: this is not what we are used to hear from here and is a new step in her career, but I dig it. I hope her former fans will follow and that she also attracts some new fans as she really has it in her to make it on this new path!
