Birth of Joy – Get Well (Starman Records)

Birth of Joy is a trio from The Netherlands bringing in psychedelia and rock’n roll blues with a clear retro touch. They take you back to the time were MC5, The Doors and Pink Floyd started to bloom!

It all starts with the psychedelic heavy metal track called Blisters. The mix between the retro sound, raging vocals and heavy guitars sounds great, I would have left the little break down halfway and just keeps it rocking, but hey I’m only a reviewer! It feels like the heavy metal version of The Doors! Meat me at the bottom is more into blues in the beginning, but pretty fast the guitars gives it a fat sound, whilst the vocals explode. I can imagine that this one works out fine on stage.

More (stoner) rock comes with Choose Sides, with some soft spots in it and less aggressive as the previous tracks but it still rocks! Numb floats on an LSD trip. If you listen too long to it you get high, although it is really a nice and soft dreamer with now and then some guitars trying to wake you up. Midnight Cruise goes back to the fat sound from MC5 and The Stooges mixed with the organ from The Doors! The bluesy guitar gives it that something extra to make it sound great, just as the vocals!

Carabiner is a hard rock shot, with a crazy voice leading. It all sounds a bit like a noise explosion! Those who are awake sounds like the perfect track to play late at night or towards the end of a set: it has a really fat rock’n roll sound and strong backings! You got me howling has the right drive and the perfect vocals as if fitting for Easy Rider! Rock’n roll! Get Well is another LSD trip. Hear the Hawaiian waves, float away and dream on! It feels a bit like Riders in the Storm from The Doors. Hands Down is the last one; we rock for one last time and get out with a big fat boom!

I must say it’s nice to review from time to time something that doesn’t get on my table often. It’s not bad at all and I can say I enjoyed the time that I listened to it without any skipping!
