We saw her on tour with Sydney Cherill and LØLØ, in Antwerp, enjoyed the gig and decided to review her album after listening to it for a while. She’s a singer songwriter with the likes of Lady Gaga, Billie Eilish, and Emilie Autumn.
The album opens with Parasite a powerful track at first driven by a piano and a magical voice (check Billie Eilish), followed by some strings and a synth. You can feel a theatrical touch in the story telling. The song is filled with emotions, nicely empowered by the music. Towards the end the sound of the song gets bigger and has an epic feel.
Ball and Chain leans more towards Lady Gaga and Emilie Autumn. The guitar play sounds excellent whilst the electronics render the more theatrical parts.
We’re All Gonna Die was live a really great track and it’s nice to relive that feeling here. The chorus is catchy, the tempo is great, the guitar rock whilst the drummer hits hard. Feels like this one should have been a single and a huge hit! It’s a strong song with a huge potential.
Funeral sounds despite the title more like a party track. The song had also on stage a positive vibe. If you read the lyrics you’ll understand why.
He Asked For It was the last track of her gig and hit it, made us all long for more. The buildup sounds up a bit alike Billie Eilish. I can say the same thing about Predator. The electronical part is fulfilling us with great beats.
Party Animal is the best track on the album and could have been the new Charli XCX single too (cherish the beats, the tempo and the lyrics). The songs works on stage and should be a huge hit (also on the dancefloor).
Aphrodite shows her more fragile side. It’s clear she has a crystal clear voice: bewitching us with her vocal beauty. I adore the strings and the soft beats. Same can be said from the acoustic track: Cupid. Here again the strings play a very important role in. The lyrics are more LØLØ-minded.
Always The Artist has an angelic sound, mesmerizing, fragile but on vocal side o so strong. You can feel the emotions and get goosebumps.
Religion takes us back the more theatrical side of Ella Red. The beats are not so loud, but yet you can hear them, it’s mainly her voice who leads the song. She goes high and low with her voice as if it’s only a simple game.
It’s Not real is not only the last track on this great album, but it was also the last song of her gig in Antwerp. The song slowly builds up until the electronics take over and the tempo goes up. The song is well crafted and mixes great lyrics with a more theatrical touch with on top simply great music. It’s also the last time she can show off her magical vocal powers.
This album is absolutely worth discovering. Ella Red has a fantastic voice, while the music constantly shifts in color, mood, and style, offering enough variation to keep things exciting throughout. The comparisons mentioned above only prove that she is an artist capable of standing alongside much bigger names. Hopefully, one day we’ll be able to say: we saw her back then in a small club before the world discovered her.
