Lordi - The Masterbeast From The Moon (AFM)

This one is the last in a series of 7 new albums from Lordi! The recorded the albums with authentic instruments from the actual sound of the age and genre that forms the red line for each album: from disco to blues rock!

First one: The Masterbeast From The Moon. Is an intro telling us the story of the album. It’s going to be a Science Fiction space horror story about celestial monsters. Weird thing is the next sequence as it’s called SCG Minus 5 Transmission Request. I noticed each album started with SCG Minus a number. There are 7 numbers and this one has number 5 but comes out as last album in a row of 7. The music here sounds a bit strange: a space opera intro followed by a piano, a bass a synth and something that sounds like a violin. Towards the end it sounds like a symphonic metal track with the typical Lordi vocals. The 70’s are clearly impregnating the sound. Well after this you know for sure that the Moonbeast is coming! Moonbeast Celestial Serpents starts with a piano, strings and a synth. The guitars clearly have a 70’s sound, almost like the typical commercial sound from then. The song could be put into the hard rock genre. Hurricane Of The Slain sounds like a drunken ballad filled with pathos and guided by a piano and synths. Spear Of The Romans sounds more like song taken from a musical, but without the vocals until our beast starts to sing and chases away the peaceful feeling .If you see the title you think it’s going to be some battle metal but you end up with a cheesy and almost commercial kind of a song recorded in the 70’s. Bells Of The Netherworld sounds like the beginning of a horror movie from the 70’s, but once the vocals enter the game it sounds more like a ballad. It’s a bit strange, but it’s a powerballad. Transmission Reply is just what it says: a short reply. Nothing scary, just a robot minded voice that replies. Church Of Succubus has a clear 70’s touch and also a bit of an 80’s slice (the synth). The backings sound like a choir. Somehow the song also sounds a bit like the Ziggy Startdust songs from the 70’s, but with a more horror minded touch. It’s a good song, however it’s really a long song (11:59) and I don’t like the drum solo! Towards the end it changes more and more into a space opera rock piece! Soliloquy is a spoken word that would fit Halloween. Robots Alive starts with sir Elton John on piano and some old school guitars. Once we hear the vocals it sounds more like a Lordi track from the 70’s, mixed with a robot voice over. Yoh Haee Von starts with a piano and a transverse flute, backed by a choir and is in the end a short interlude that sends out a ray of light. We close with Transmission On Repeat: announcing the beginning of the end!

Well this closes down the box. It was a long trip! I’m happy I wrote most of the review in 2021. I just wrote the last sentences of this one in 2022. I think the whole covid-19 inspired Lordi, whilst the quarantine helped them to get things done as they all had time to write and work out this huge work and thus recording 7 albums in a row! I hope it works out for them. I missed the lyric sheets and the artwork and all the extra info about each album, but I did my best and gambled a bit about what they wanted to present us! Enjoy! End of transmission!
