The Deathtones - The American Invasion (We Are Horror Records)

The band had this to say: "The name, “The American Invasion” came to us in November 2022 when we signed with We Are Horror Records out of the UK. None of us had ever had a record come out overseas, so we viewed it as we were this American horror band invading British shores, hence the military theme.

Our lead singer/songwriter Billy Bones is an ardent history buff and he thought, “well the British invaded us a few times over the centuries… maybe now it’s our turn.” Another reason for “Invasion” is when you think of zombies, there’s always this gigantic horde sweeping over the land, destroying all in their path and adding more zombies to their ranks. That’s how we as a band have felt this last year. We started off with a few friends and diehards following us and now we have nearly eight thousand fans at the time of this release. Our ranks are growing and The Deathtones “virus is spreading”.

The American Invasion was released on 27th January 2023. Debut single Back From the Grave arrived on Friday the 13th of January, and is available as part of the pre-order!

All Hallows Eve starts with a clear gothic rock touch and vocals that sounds like recorded in a cold cave. I like the global music sound (and for sure the guitar play).

The American Invasion is the title track and brings in zombies/ a killer virus and mix it with an old school rock & punk touch. I once again adore the sharp lead guitar play. The vocals remind me a bit of The Damned and maybe I’m spot on with this remark? In the end it’s a real cool track!

The Shape reminds you of nightmare’s when you were still a kid and saw monsters in the shadows/dark. I like the idea behind this song. It’s clear the drummer could just do whatever he wants hitting pretty hard. The vocals sounds pretty much into gothic.

BTK has a more commercial sound, despite the roaring guitars and thanks to the catchy backings. It’s a simple but very effective track that will become sticky the more you listen to it! Pretty fast you will sing a-long with the backings! And no Bind Torture and Kill can’t be inspired by that famous Suicide Commando track or am I wrong?

Here With Me (A Chainsaw Love Story) is indeed a weird love story driven by a chainsaw and a synth playing the piano. I can imagine people would put on their lighters or use their mobile light until the song gets a more rocking tempo. Somehow here the vocals remind me a bit of Elvis Presley.

Hath No Fury goes more into metal (thanks to the guitar and the hammering drums) after the long spoken word intro. I adore the story telling in this song!

Black Dahlia Beauty Mark starts slowly with the lead guitar rambling a bit, soon followed by the drums. In the end it’s a mid-tempo gothic rock song. The vocals remind me here a bit of The 69 Eyes (hence why is this band not signed here as they would also fit the label’s roster).

Nightmare builds up slowly and gets a mid-tempo with a cool drum and guitar sound. Somehow this song doesn’t have that sparkle making it a special track (however the start is promising).

Saucy Jack is a funny gothic rocker with a saucy touch and good vocals (with a slice of melancholia and a catchy feel). Rock on!

The Colorado Boogie goes back to the Gothic rock Elvis Presley with an undertaker feel and a good old retro touch!

Book Of The Dead opens with the bass rambling softly and slowly building up. The theme goes back to the main title. I hear a catchy passage every now and then (with the backings).

Werewolf of Wysteria I adore the guitar minded opening and the howling wolves! The tempo could be a bit higher after the opening and the vocals a bit harsher. Once again the backings give this song a sweeter touch, whilst we need a more scary vibe.

Imposter at The Costume Party sounds like recorded in one go last minute. I’m not sure if this song fits on this album. The sound also differs from all the other songs: a more post punk minded sound. Even the vocals sound different.

He Stalks The Night talks about something that happened apparently for real and gives us an Helsinki vampire feel! Gothic rock with a catchy feel! It’s a cool rocking one that might become a hit on stage too!

From Dusk Till Dawn sounds like a strange cover version from The 69 Eyes of maybe they just got inspired by the same movie/series and give this song the same catchy vibe? It’s a cool ending to a very special album!

It was the first time I reviewed something from this band and I heard clearly influences from other bands, but besides that I can say I enjoyed their gothic horror kind rock with a retro touch! I’m happy to introduce them to our dear readers and hope they will enjoy it too!
