Enter the dark world of “Dictator,” the latest album by Enzo Kreft, where his signature synth sounds slither like shadows across a menacing landscape. With this album, Kreft reaffirms his status as an uncompromising voice in the underground electro-wave scene. “Dictator” is a mirror reflecting brutal truths: power corrupts, freedom is fragile, and the fight for justice is endless.

Enzo Kreft from Mechelen has been around for a long time: in the early 80’s he released two obscure yet highly acclaimed minimal synth cassettes, “Me Is!” (1983) and “Cicatrice” (1984). Kreft stands for a dark electronic, but danceable and atmospheric sound with socially critical lyrics. In 2010 his music was revived on “Underground Belgian Wave Vol.2” by Walhalla Records and in 2016 “Dark Matter” was released, a compilation LP with his “old” songs on the same label. From that year on everything has accelerated. Enzo Kreft releases a number of not unnoticed new albums ("Turning Point" in 2016, "Wasteland" in 2017, "Control" in 2019, "Different World" in 2021 and “Shelter” in 2023) and he performs live on several stages with intense, energetic shows and breathtaking visuals that accompany his dark electro-wave. At the end of 2023, the compilation vinyl album "XL" was released, on the occasion of 40 years of Enzo Kreft. And now there is the new, highly topical album "Dictator"!

The journey begins with “Blindfolded Liberty,” an oppressive instrumental that feels like a warning signal. It’s the calm before the storm, rising with drum rolls. Darkness is here and yes it might be a referral to Trump and Putin.

Self-Proclaimed Savior of the Nation” has great beats and the intro reminds me of an American TV preacher, but the words might also come from Trump’s mouth. The vocals sound a bit like Kraftwork. The song feels like an actual hit: I can hear the potential! It’s really a great track! I love it!

Propaganda Parade” pull the listener into a web of lies and manipulation. These are the anthems of power-hungry leaders, carried by an ominous pulse that shatters the illusion of control. The opening reminds me of a pirate song, but once the vocals jump in it changes to a cold but yet very catchy track. The lyrics are fighting with the almost happy feeling coming from the music. It’s as if one is selling bad news through happy music.

In “Citadel of Fear,” Kreft thrusts us into the heart of the fear machine, where regimes consolidate power through fear and intimidation. It’s a very actual song, whilst the music bring us back to the 80’s, popping up the link with the cold war between east and west (sadly something very actual again). The tempo is ok (not ahigh tempo, but fast enough to make it sound good).

Chains of Silence” feels like a suffocating grip, a musical prison where censorship and control drain the air from the room. The lyrics are once again very actual. I adore the guitar sound and the percussion!

Yet even in this darkness, Kreft strikes an ironic tone with “The Iron Fist’s Dance,” a darkly humorous dancefloor filler that makes you dance to the grim rhythms of tyranny. Listen to the whip, the heavy pounding beats and excellent synth. The chorus is very catchy whilst the vocals come close to Kraftwerk. This one is a hit!

The raw reality becomes painfully tangible in “Penal Colony,” a nightmare where dissidents are broken by biting cold, isolation, and despair. The music brings us retro wave (from the 80’s), a good tempo and globally speaking a well-crafted track!

Yet there is light in the darkness: “Martyr’s Melody”. You can hear birds sing whilst we undergo the slow tempo, the church bells at the end don’t bring good news (according to me and thus confirming the title).

Unyielding Sparks” honour the resilience and courage of those who continue to fight, even against impossible odds. The song is a good up-tempo track with a nice global sound.

With “Hey, Mr. Dictator,” Kreft takes direct aim at the world’s authoritarian leaders. The song is a revelation, a confrontation that tears off their masks. Heavy beats, sharp words that really cut deep and a nice tempo. You can fill in any name of any dictator if you want.

The Sword and the Pen,” a philosophical spoken word track, reminds us that words are mightier than weapons and ideas outlast regimes. It’s a great idea, but it’s not my cup of tea.

The finale, “Dawn of Dissent,” arrives swiftly as a new dawn breaks: an uprising is underway. The fade-out at the end symbolizes that this is just a snapshot of a much larger story: the ongoing fight against dictatorships. I adore the English accent of the narrator whilst the beats pump up the expectations and make you feel the rising tension!

With “Dictator,” Enzo Kreft delivers a powerful, thought-provoking album that leaves a lasting impression both musically and thematically. A must-have for Enzo Kreft fans and anyone who appreciates dark, meaningful electronics. I noticed a few hits on it, so if used as how it should: there’s a bright future for them! Sadly the message behind this album is very actual. I’m hoping it wont be by the end of the year.
